Loco for Coco(nut Oil)

Let me preface this post by admitting that I’m not a huge fan of coconut. I love the scent of it (not the fresh stuff, but the made-in-a-factory kind you smell in inexpensive lotion and bath product - eek I love it!) but I’ve never been one for the taste. Let’s put it this way, I’ll skip a dessert if it has coconut on it. That’s saying a lot. I love dessert. So when I realized my love for this - err... beauty product? - I was quite surprised.

I first found out about this when a group of my girlfriends were prepping in Leah’s bathroom to go to dinner. I was minding my own business, applying lipstick while waiting for the glue on my fake lashes to dry when I smelled heaven. I mean, I don’t really know what heaven smells like... but I think it’s something like this. Or donuts. I whipped my head around to see Leah with a jar of Trader Joe’s Organic Coconut Oil. She was slathering it all over her legs. Being a beauty addict, I had to see what it was.

After re-reading the label three times I realized nowhere on it did it mention anything about applying it to your body. It was a cooking oil! Startled, I asked Leah in a joking way if she was planning on cooking herself for dinner. She laughed and explained a friend of hers had told her about using this organic oil instead of body lotion. Not only does the coconut smell amazing (and taste too! Because it’s normal to care about what you taste like, yeah? O_o ) but her legs looked as silky as a Victoria’s Secret model! That night I applied some to my arms, legs and chest and felt super sexy the whole evening.

The next morning I headed to my neighborhood Trader Joe’s to grab my own jar of the magic slime. Of course I ended up leaving with a cart full of groceries including daisies and fresh frozen salmon. (How in the world is the salmon fresh if it’s frozen?!) When I found the holy grail item that sparked my shopping spree I was quite confused. Some of the jars looked as if they contained absolute liquid oil and some seemed to be the same but in more of a solid form. Almost as if it had been frozen. I picked the latter since it looked the most like the one Leah had. I also think it would be easier to apply like lotion instead of a straight up liquid that would slide straight through my fingers. Let the odds be ever in my favor.

Fast forward a week and a few days. I don’t know what I did without this. I’ve realized that I love applying it to my legs everyday when I get out of the shower (Use sparingly so it soaks in properly! If you glob it on it stays greasy.) but I’m not a huge fan of it on the rest of my body. Don’t get my wrong, I won’t use anything else on my legs now. But there’s something about it that I would rather use regular body lotion on the rest of me. Maybe it’s my irrational fear that I’ll smell so good the bugs outside will be attracted to me and attack me. Who knows? It could happen. Anyways, I’ve never had silkier, smoother legs and I’m just glad I was introduced to this product before summer is over!

I did some online digging about this oil and here’s what I found...

1- A lot (and I mean a lot) of people know and rave about coconut oil. Where was I when everyone was discovering this miracle product? Living under a rock - or coconut - obviously!

2- There are a ton of beauty uses for this product. Everything from using it as a makeup remover to a hair mask. I’ll keep you guys updated on which ones I try and whether or not I liked it.

3- You can get your own 16 oz jar at Trader Joes for $5.99
For those of you who don’t live near a Trader Joe’s (I didn’t even know what it was for the first 17 years of my life) I found some online alternatives for you... here, here, here and here!

  6. I just used coconut oil to lightly pan fry some chicken while drinking some coconut water. Ever since my last trip to Cabo I have had some strange obsession with coconuts..... I should try this out and wear it.

I was wondering if your blog is available on blogloving? (My new current obsession.) I would love to keep your blog on my daily reads.

  14. I mix my own body lotion using coconut oil. You may like that better on your body. You still get the benefits of coconut oil but in lotion form. I mix 2 parts of my favorite body lotion with 1 part vitamin e cream and 1 part solid, organic, coconut oil. So if I have 16 oz. of lotion I add in 8 oz. of vitamin e cream and 8 oz. of coconut oil. I whip it up until really well combined using my stand mixer and then put it into jars. I cannot rave enough about how much softer and smoother my skin is since I started using this blend 2 years ago. I am over 40 and grew up on the beach in San Diego where I never wore sunscreen and tanned (or burned) all the time...not great skin care. My skin is much more youthful and healthy now and I don't feel like I have any sun damage at all. I love using coconut oil!

  16. FYI, coconut has a very low melting point, which is why some looked solid while some looked more liquidy. It's all the same stuff, and if you keep your jar in a warm place, it will melt like the ones you saw. Conversely, if you keep it in the fridge (which I do not recommend) it will become all waxy and solid, like chapstick. :) I am enjoying reading your blog, by the way!

    1. Hi Mana, I saw your comment and just had to reply...I have been using Coconut Oil for a while and it is AMAZING!! If you have some "problem" areas, just apply the oil to the spot several times a day. I apply it right before bed and after a few days the spot(s) is gone!! Also, applying more frequently speeds up the process... Hope That Helped11 :)

  23. The liquidy one you saw is just the melted version. To keep it solid, put it in the fridge. It's amazing on the backs of your hands (use sparingly) and around the cuticles.

  24. OMG Blair, I LOVE coconut oil!!! I use it as a makeup remover, acne treatment, after shave lotion, moisturizer, etc...it is amazing!!! The reason some were liquidy was because those were warmer, once they get to a certain temp they melt or harden. if you store it in a cold place it will get thicker and harder. :)

  25. Trader Joes also has a really good Coconut Body Butter. It's the best body butter ever, and it's super inexpensive. I bought four of them last time I was there, because I'm always afraid that products will go out of stock. That's usually the case when I find an amazing product.

  27. its great as a hair mask as long as you shampoo afterward but I put it in a bottle that squirts or pumps and use it as an eyemakeuo remover every night. I wear a crap load of waterproof mascara and this is the only thing that takes it right off without taking my lashes with it. also I fry with it. its the only oil that doesn't store as fat in the body (read the book Skinny Bitch)

  30. I too am not a fan of coconut, the texture bothers be horribly, but when 2 of my 4 beagles (yes, I know I'm crazy!) started suffering from the worst flea allergies that we have ever seen I found that giving them coconut oil can help. Yep, sounded a little crazy to me as well but I did my research and found that it really does help with a HUGE number of doggy issues. So off I went to find the "Virgin or Unrefined" kind-which can be a pain to find when you don't want to fight the traffic to get to our Trader Joe's-and literally within 2 weeks we were seeing less lesions from the flea bites and best of all my boy Bo has stopped ripping chunks (literally CHUNKS!) of hair out of himself to the point he would be bleeding! Miracle upon miracles this stuff is! Ours melts into liquid pretty quickly after bringing it home (I live in NE Georgia where it has been insanely hot!) and when I feed them they get a small amount on their dry food. The recommendation for amounts I found was one teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight, starting with a very small amount and working up the recommended dose. Hope this helps someone out there! I'm pretty sure you can give this to cats as well, but ours doesn't have the problems so I've never given her any to try!

  33. yessss! i love coconut oil...i use this brand named parachute which is an indian brand and its easily available where i live, i.e. Pakistan. my hair and skin gets super dry in winters and i love using this on my arms, face and neck and hair. i only use a tiny amount, in winters when its in solid form because of the cold a tiny glob, rub it between your hands to warm up and melt it like a lotion or in summers, a few drops goes a long way, although i prefer to not use it as much in summers cuz the weather her gets super hot and humid. it does wonders to my skin and hair. and natural oils are just as good for cooking as they are for application, i prefer natural products any day. try using olive oil too, it doesn't smell as nice, obviously, but it does wonders to your skin and hair. i love applying olive oil (and i use extra virgin for added nutrients) on my feet to keep them from going dry and on my legs and arms , and even on my face at times. plus olive oil is easier to wash out (rinses out after shampooing and conditioning once) than coconut oil (which is harder to rinse out unless you shampoo twice and if using warm-hot water)and i love to rub a bit on my hands and cuticles. do give it a try too!
